Sunflowers

Growing up my mom would always say that the sunflowers would bloom when it was time to head back to school. Every summer I would dread the sight of the bright yellow flowers and once the first one blossomed I would begin to fear. Sunflowers meant school and school meant being locked inside all day followed by freezing winters.

This year it seems the sunflowers have bloomed earlier than usual and I am reminded that I will be starting school again soon.

The thought is exciting and absolutely terrifying. I am excited to meet new people and have the experience of going to college, but at the same time I am scared stiff of what may lie in my future. I will be moving for the first time in my life, and sharing a room with someone I have only stalked on Facebook. I will have more responsibility and more freedom, but I can no longer use my mother as a scapegoat. It just doesn't seem convincing for a college student living away from home to sat "Sorry, my mom said I'm not allowed to hang out with you. I have to stay and clean my room tonight."

I am nervous, yes, but the experiences are defiantly exciting. I just need to put my man pants on and say no to people.

Blessed

You know those moments when you wake up and shower and in hindsight realize you could have slept for at least another half hour? Yeah that was me this morning.

I woke up at 7:30 like I usually do on Sundays and showered only to remember that I work today. No church for me. I was kind of bummed. Add that to the fact that I am home working while my mom and brothers are on vacation made me a little more than bummed.

I am grateful that I paused for a moment during my pity party to look outside. The sun had risen, our horses were eating peacefully, and there was just kind of a small whisper in the back of my mind saying: "You're going to miss this in about a month."

I sighed knowing the voice was right. In three weeks I am set to move down to college. Needless to say, I am scared. However, I know that I will always have a home here with loving parents and my little brothers (even though they aren't so little anymore).

The Lord has a plan for me, I just need to have the faith to do what I need to.

Reality Check

Me and Beto at Senior Ball this past fall.
Occasionally I forget how amazing the people in my life are. It is typically around the point that I begin to think of them as mere acquaintances when something will happen to change my view and help me realize that they really do mean a lot to me and apparently I mean something to them too.

One night in June or July someone tried to break into the store where I work while my friend and I were closing. No one was hurt and there was no damage except for the new dents in the back door and a new fear of loud noises and a near constant paranoia for me. Whenever I hear a sound similar to that of someone hitting a door I freak out. Whenever I think I see someone out of the corner of my eye at work I freak out. Whenever there are cars sitting suspiciously outside somewhere I freak out. I'm sure you get the general idea of my problem.

A while back in January or February Beto, who works with me, showed up and knocked angrily on the back door not realizing the effect it would have on me. I screamed bloody murder and was a total wreck the rest of the night. A few weeks later I was closing with another employee when the phone rang. He answered it and a moment later let Beto in through the back door. I worried that he had knocked and had been standing outside for a while before he called, but when I asked him about it he explained that he didn't want to scare me again.

Last night I was closing with Beto for the first time in a while. When we closed we noticed that there were two cars sitting in the parking lot of the gas station across the street. It was slightly suspicious because the station closed a half hour before we did. As we were about to leave we noticed that the cars were still parked across the street with their lights on as they had been for the past hour. I began to quietly freak out in the back of my mind.

For about ten minutes we hid in the office and peaked through the blinds where they couldn't see us. Once they had suspiciously left together we hurried out to leave. I reached for a bag of trash to carry to the dumpster, but he insisted that I just go start the car and make sure we were ready to leave as soon as he had everything thrown away.

After I dropped him off at his house I made my way home, freaking out the whole way I might add. When I got home I found a text from him asking if I had made it home okay. The simple acts that night had made me realize what an amazing friend he actually is and how much I didn't realize it.

I lay awake for at least an hour thinking of how blessed I was for the people that the Lord has put into my life. I realized that even if I grow apart from people they are still in my life for a reason and maybe that reason is just to be a comfort when I am scared (which is often, let's face it.)

Letters for Later

"It's been a long day without you, my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.
We've come a long way from where we began
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.
When I see you again."

Now I know this song is supposed to be for Fast and Furious star Paul Walker, but whenever I hear it I can't help but think about my future husband. I know I knew him in the past, before either of us were born, before this life. I know he is out there somewhere right now.

It is so strange to think that the person I am going to spend the rest of eternity with is out there somewhere. He could be one of my friends right now, or a complete stranger. I could meet him at college, or work, or later in life. I could know him now and just not realize that he is my Mr. Right.

Since I know he is out there somewhere, I have begun writing letters to him. Letters no one will ever see until I am married and even then only he will be able to see them. It is kind of like keeping a journal except each entry starts with "Dear Mr. Faith," and ends with "I love you, Aften Marie". Each day I just write about things that had happened, things I wish he had been there for, and things that I know I will want to tell him, but I know I will forget about it by the time I actually meet him. I write about things I want for us and things that I hope for our children.

It may seem strange to others looking for an outside point of view, but for me it helps me keeps my eyes on the path ahead of me. I want to stay worthy to marry my husband and to go to the temple and be sealed with him for time and all eternity. Even though I haven't met him yet in this life I miss him and I want him to feel like he has been a part of my life. I want him to know how often I think of him during the day.

To my future Husband just incase you ever stumble upon this (and I am really sorry if you do):

It's been a long day without you, my friend, and I'll tell you all about it when I see you again. We've come a long way from where we began, oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again. When I see you again.

I can't wait and I love you.
I love you,
Aften Marie

Photo Albums

So today I am sitting in the school library scanning pages from all of my photo albums just incase something happens we have a copy of all the pictures. Some of them are pretty amazing, so I figured I would share some of my childhood foolishness!

Some of them are rather amusing and have funny backstories, and others are just random things I enjoyed.
Back when I was cute :) haha

This one right here was taken in second grade. It was the first time I chopped my hair off and I was so nervous to go to the photographer, because I didn't know what to expect.

I remember I wore the necklace because it was my favorite one ever, not because it matched or anything. Then that night I went to bed still wearing it (despite having my mother tell me several times to never wear necklaces to bed) and it broke. I sobbed for hours. Daddy ended up fixing it for me, probably because he was sick of hearing me cry about my now broken favorite necklace.

Fat babies are the cutest babies!

I was a super chubby baby. My dad used to pretend I was a sumo wrestler and we would pretend to fight. I think it was his favorite pastime.

Yes. My parents dressed me as a boy for about
the first five or six years of my life…

I vaguely remember this experience. My dad and I decided to go sledding one day and he put me on the sled and sent me down. Somewhere in the midst of the ride I went careening into a snow bank and face planted on the icy road. Not fun. I remember being really upset that Craig didn't feel any sympathy either… Then we went and built a giant snowman because that was probably much safer than riding a piece of plastic down a giant hill.

Well, that's all for now! I have to go pack to leave for Region Debate tomorrow.

Inner Monologue of My Sleep Cycle

So right now I am procrastinating away my time, money, and life. There is really no better way to put it than that. I know I need to be filling out scholarship stuff, doing chores, preparing for life after high school, but all I really want to do is take a nap. This is how my life has gone lately:

10:00 pm: Hmm… maybe I should go to bed now… Nahhh, I'll just scroll really quickly through Facebook and Pinterest really quick, then I'll go to bed. No harm done.

11:30 pm: Oh crap! It's so much later than I thought it was! I better go to bed right now.

12:00am: Finally fall asleep.

5:00 am: Do I really need a shower this morning? Yes, Aften, you are disgusting. Go get in the shower, but make it quick.

5:30am: If I fall back asleep right now I could probably get another 40 minutes of sleep!

5:40am: Fall asleep you idiot.

5:50am: Come on, it's really not that hard to sleep.

6:00am: Oh my heavens you stupid human being why won't you fall asleep!!??

6:05am: Finally fall asleep again.

6:10am: OH MY FREAKING GOSH YOU STUPID PERSON!! NOW YOU HAVE TO WAKE UP AGAIN!!!

From then on I am pretty much a zombie for the rest of the day and everyone thinks I am angry with them, but I'm really not. Well, maybe I am, depending on who it is. There are just some people you can't stand when your brain is fully functioning, but once it isn't they just trigger your inner serial killer…

Words

So this is a speech I wrote for my English class, but I wanted to share it on here because I kind of like it.

Ugly. Hateful. Coarse. Cynical. Disgusting. Hideous. Unoriginal. Grotesque. Hypocrisy. Failure.

Every book you have ever read was made up of different combinations of the same 26 letters. Thousands and thousands of words made up of the same twenty-six little letters. It doesn’t seem like much, does it? Twenty-six little letters strung into words and braided into sentences then woven into conversations and speeches that have changed the world. These tapestries grace the halls of history and alter the paths of travelers through life.

Think of the phrase “I have a dream.” Eleven letters, four little words that helped change the course of American History. Martin Luther King Jr. successfully changed the way our country was run simply by using words. Though the fight for equal rights is still being fought today, how much longer would it have taken for the fight to have even begun if he hadn’t took a stand 61 years ago? What would we be learning about in History class if “I have a Dream” had never been said?

It has been said that the words that come out of our mouth are the most powerful things to ever be on this earth. They have the power to build people up, but at the same time they can tear people apart. Bruises fade, but words will haunt memories forever.

Once upon a time there was a girl, named Annalise, who loved to dance more than anything else. She loved the way she felt spinning across the floor and the sensation of flying when she would perfectly execute a leap. She loved the way the music would flow through her and how she felt as though she was part of the music instead of just a bystander. Every day for six years she would slide on the soft leather ballet slippers and let herself get carried away.

Then the inevitable happened. She had to change dance schools. Nervously she showed up for classes her first day and discovered that her new coach was, as she put it, likely the teenage daughter of the devil.

The first few classes went as smoothly as possible, but then things took a turn for the worst. Her coach began yelling at her for “sloppy posture” and “not pointing her toes enough.” Instead of getting offended, however, Annalise only worked harder to improve. After a few weeks there was nothing left for her coach to find fault in so she turned on the girl herself. Things like “Keep her in the back so no one sees how pale she is,” and “Honey, you will never be a professional dancer. You’re too fat,” were flung around the dance studio. At first the she tried to ignore them but after months and months of being told everything about her was wrong she started to believe the words. When the end of the dance season rolled around she told her mom she was tired of ballet and didn’t want to dance anymore. She never told the real reason she quit dancing, not even to her parents.

It has now been six years since Annalise last danced. Six years since she has heard those cruel words thrown her way. Yet, whenever she goes shopping for clothes, wears shorts, or goes swimming with her friends, she can hear the harsh words of her dance coach echoing in her mind.

An unknown author said: “There exists, for everyone, a sentence - a series of words - that has the power to destroy you. Another sentence exists, another series of words, that could heal you. If you're lucky you will get the second, but you can be certain of getting the first.”
When there is already so much heartache in our world today, why do we find it necessary to use our words to cause more pain?

Louis Nizer said: “Words of comfort, skillfully administered, are the oldest therapy known to man.”
We have all been there. I know we have. We have all been in a situation where absolutely nothing is going right. When everything is falling through, and the minutes seem to drag, when someone comes along and says exactly the right thing at the right time and your whole outlook on things turns around. A famous quote from Buddha says: “Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.” and it seems this particular person knows just what to say to bring peace.

One sincere word instead of thousands of empty meaningless words can change someone’s life. We can all be the person who has the right words to say.

I have always considered myself to have a good life. I’ve had a good home, caring parents, a soft bed, and all the food I could possibly want. I’ve also had words. Ever since I was little I have loved words. Big words, small words, fancy words, simple words, beautiful words, and most of all the right words. I don’t talk much because I don’t like the thought of wasting my words. As if somewhere among the jumble of pictures and thoughts in my brain is an hourglass of sorts that holds all the words I will ever speak. Because of this mind set I used to think that I would always know what to say and when to say it, because up to a point it had worked. But then, on October 25, 2014, tragedy struck, and with the blindsiding blow I watched as my hourglass of words fell from the pedestal I had put it on and shatter on the floor. My words were gone. My grief was silent because the words I had so carefully tended to were now scattered and broken. I couldn’t even think of a way to tell those close to me what had happened. Along with the grief was an onset of panic as I time after time tried to repair my words but nothing would work. The biggest speaking contest of my life was in exactly four days and my words were not functioning. Then the night before I left for Kentucky a close friend came to me and with a hug she offered me two little words that helped to repair the fractured glass of my hourglass of words. “I’m here.” Those two little words helped change my life.

We never know what is going on in the lives of others. Choose your words carefully. Remember those words from the beginning of my speech? They are considered the ugliest words in the English language. Instead of those hideous words next time consider using words like: beauty, grace, peace, happiness, caring, kindness, hope, love.

A Little Bite of Heaven

These are absolutely delicious and I really hope you like them. If you click on the link at the bottom it will take you to the site I got the recipe
from and give you a little more history about this delicious Isreali treat.

Chocolate Balls
Kadorei Shokolad
This recipe is adopted from Ruth Sirkis’s “Children Are Cooking” cookbook.
7 ounces (about 30) biscuits
3/4 cup granulated sugar
5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
7 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3.5 ounces (7 tablespoons) of butter or margarine, softened
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Desiccated coconut, in a bowl
Small colored candies, in a bowl
1) Put the biscuits in a plastic or paper bag and close tightly. Using a rolling pin or meat tenderizer crush or pound the biscuits until the biscuits have the consistency of rice.
2) Pour the biscuits into a large bowl. Add the sugar, cocoa and the cinnamon and mix well. Add the vanilla, softened butter, milk and stir until the batter comes together. If the mixture doesn’t bind, add another tablespoon of milk.
3) Take a tablespoon of the batter and roll it between the hands to form a ball.
4) Coat these balls in either coconut or colored candies by rolling them from side to side. Place on a serving tray.

Hips Don't Lie...

Neither do knees or ankles apparently. I have officially named the joints in my legs Snap, Crackle, and Pop because of the sounds they make when I move.

My friend Jared has a theory about people who dance when they are young. The theory is: "Dancers peak at 13. After that, they just start falling apart."

I have to agree with his theory. I danced for seven years growing up, five years of ballet and two of other styles. I tumbled for four years along with this. Fortunately, I don't have any serious injuries, no surgeries, and nothing crippling. What I do have, however, is annoying and occasionally painful popping and snapping sounds.

Now I'm not saying dancing is bad. I loved dancing. Even today I would take a dance class in a heartbeat. I can't wait for college and the possibility of dancing once again. I miss it more than anything. I just am mildly annoyed with my legs.

Listen to Your Heart

So I'm going to keep this short and sweet considering how late it is and the fact that I have to be up at six in the morning tomorrow...

Now I seriously want to try to make these
but I can't stand the thought of ruining
sheet music to do so...
So there's this song and it goes... "Listen to your heart... when he's calling for you... listen to your heart... there's nothing else you can dooo... I don't know where you're goin' and I don't know whyyyy... but listen to your heart.. befoooorreee you tell him gooodbyyyee."

I don't remember who sings it and frankly right now I am far too lazy to look it up. Anywho I was listening to this song today as I was cleaning out my car and it hit me, slowly at first and then with the force of a runaway quarter horse that this song is for me. I need to listen to my heart. I am a Cancer. That's my zodiac. I am entirely ruled by my emotions. So wouldn't listening to my heart be the easiest thing to do?

I started thinking about the two guys I mentioned a couple of posts back and I came to a decision. I am 17 freaking years old. I am a child still. I don't need someone attached to me at all freaking times. I am not ready to commit to anything. Someday sure, I wanna get married in the Temple and start a family. Someday I want my happily ever after, but right now I have so much more to live for! I don't want someone to control me whether directly or indirectly. I don't want it. I don't want the stress involved with a high school relationship. Sure some people make it work but I don't want to.

Let life come when it comes. In five years I could be married, and the thought terrifies me. I thought that maybe if I got into a serious relationship now it would help calm those fears of the future. Boy, was I wrong. If anything it made me more uptight and nervous. I'm paranoid as it is. Just ask my friends. I don't need more stress in my life right now. NO High School relationships for me, thank you. End of rant.

Dear Devon

Dear Devon,

My beautiful, wonderful, amazing Devon. I know the chances of you ever seeing this are slim, but I wanted to put it out there anyways.

You are one of my best friends, and always will be. I know I can always count on you to be there by my side. The Lord has put you in my life for a reason, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I know right now you are having a rough time. Things are not going exactly the way you had been hoping they would. This is for a reason, I promise. Everyone has off days. You are an amazing, talented, hardworking swimmer. There are days when you try your hardest and things just don't go the way you had hoped they would. In a couple of months you will be called on a mission. You will be a wonderful, dedicated missionary, but there will be days that things just don't go the way you had hoped they would. The Lord has given you this trial to help prepare you, to show you that you can get through the hard times. Please don't beat yourself up over this.

Thank you for always being there whenever I need to talk, or rant, or make emergency trips to Park City and I don't want to go alone. Thank you for being my shoulder to cry on, or nap on, depending on the day.

From our late night talks after dances or dates that leave me speeding home to avoid missing curfew, to our detailed plans for stalking or hiding bodies you have always been there to help brighten my day.

You are such a kind and giving person and it makes me want to try harder to be my best. Your dedication to what you want to do is inspiring and something for me to strive to become.

The Lord did not make us sisters, but life has. Thank you for everything. You are amazing. I love you.

Forever and Always,
Aften Marie

The Valentine's Day Debacle

So I have a problem. I don't know what to get Boy for Valentine's Day. There are only three days until Valentine's Day and I haven't thought of a single freaking thing. I only have one shot at shopping and that is today. If I can't find anything I will be marked as unthoughtful and cheap. Neither of which are true, I just severely struggle when it comes to getting gifts for people.

This is also the first time I have had pressure when it comes to buying Valentine's gifts. Usually with my friends I just get gag gifts or chocolate or something simple, but this time it's different. I'm not even sure what exactly Boy and I are. It makes life very confusing.

Also, what if he gets me something super nice and amazing and I get him something stupid. What if his gift for me is expensive and mine isn't really.

My bank account is dwindling and my panic is growing. It isn't supposed to be this complicated.

Freaking Amazing Box Brownies

So these are some really amazing brownies. I hope you like them. (Sorry about being photo-less)

~ One box of your favorite box brownies
~ One 12 oz bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
~ One cup crushed walnuts (optional)

Directions: Heat oven as directed on brownie box. Mix brownie mix as instructed. Add chocolate chips as desired. (I prefer about half a bag depending on the amount of brownie mix.) Grease pan and pour mix into the pan. Sprinkle crushed walnuts on the top and bake 5 to 10 minutes longer than directed to insure the center cooks all the way through.

Enjoy!

I Love to See the Temple

I love living in Northern Utah because it seems like no matter where you go, you can see a temple somewhere in the Salt Lake Valley area. It makes my heart happy.
I found this picture on Pinterest today and fell in love with it.
Happy Sunday everyone!

Classified Information

Warning!! What you are about to read is highly classified information! Once you have read the following information, you are required to remain silent or risk death by assassins that will find you...

I'm just kidding about the assassins....

So a little bit of a back story before I get into the actual story:

Once upon a time, in a land and time not so far away lived a girl who worked at a Subway restaurant. She was rather ordinary looking, and even though she was 17 she had never really gone on any dates. (It wasn't because she didn't like anyone, it was because she was incredibly and painfully shy.) She had been on dates for dances like Prom, Morp, and Senior Ball, and one horrible date that was to never be spoken of, but nothing else.

Now there was this other guy who worked at the same Subway and after a little while she started to think that she liked him. For six months she just kind of watched from a distance and wished he would like her too. (She was not an assertive kind of person.) Then he took her to Senior Ball. She was so excited! And then on the way home... he held her hand! Oh, life was good. Or so she thought. Turns out that he had an issue with commitment and turned out to be a royal douche. By this point she figured she had wasted about eight months of her life.

Now to the real story.

I'm sure most of you have already guessed that the pathetic girl in the first story is actually me. Well, if you guessed that, you were right.

Around the same time I was realizing that guy #1 was a bad idea, and putting myself in a "detox" of sorts guy #2 came into my life. Well, that's sort of a lie. He had been in my life since school started about six months before, but I hadn't really known him. He was just one of the few guys on my debate team, nothing more. Nothing more, that is, until the two day tournament reared its ugly head.

Two days of intense competition, early morning and late night bus rides, and sleeping in the halls of a random school. It was torture. By the end of the second day of competing I had successfully broken my brain to a point where I could no longer English. It was bad.

Anywho. The first night, on the bus ride home, I made the mistake of letting Guy #2 let me use my pillow. Huge mistake. The next day, I returned from my first round of competing only to find that my pillow was in use. Um, ok. I was gonna use that. Whatever.

The end result was a rowdy fight, name calling, and sprinting down the hall... over a pillow.

When we were packing up to leave, he helped me put my coat on and carry my stuff out to the bus and on the ride home he sat by me. We played ultimate corners and I only succeeded in pushing him out of the seat once. It got a little crazy.

By the time we got home I was pretty sure there was a possibility of me actually liking this guy. Now there's something strange.

The other day my friends ended up setting us up for a date… in a rather embarrassing way, might I add.  Now there is an upcoming date and I am totally excited. I'm not even ashamed to admit it. Who cares if my parents think it's weird, I think its awesome. More news later!

Lazy

Sometimes I sit in my room all alone late at night attempting to pull my too short hair into a baby ponytail, listening to T. Swift, scrolling through Pinterest, and pretending to be an amazing person I get the feeling that maybe I should write about my weird little life. So here we go. If these posts are horribly boring or stupid... "Sorry, not sorry," as one of my best friends likes to put it. I can't promise to be inspirational, or funny, or even make sense most of the time, but perhaps you will find something you relate to among my long rants and possibly meaningless tangents.

It's late. Well, not horribly late. I am exhausted, but I can't sleep. It's super crazy how it works, I don't even really understand it. I wake up every morning at 5 so I have time to shower before the rest of the house wakes up and steals all my hot water, then go back to sleep til 6:10. I then proceed to stumble out of my room (after successfully tripping over everything scattered and strewn across my floor) and join my mother and two younger brothers for breakfast and our morning scripture study. After getting dressed and ready for the day I either drive or ride the bus to school (It all depends on how long it takes me to get ready and how much fuel is in my car in comparison to how much money I have in the bank). I then drift my way through my classes, swearing that during my third hour free period I will sleep... It never happens. By the time school gets out I am ready for a nap, so I pass out on the couch in hopes that someone will wake me up after a half hour or something... this too never happens. The rest of the day I am groggy, grouchy, and too lazy to do anything. By the time I should be going to bed I realize I have so much I have to get done. There's a speech I need to write for that debate tournament coming up, the speech for my English class, the vaccination flyer for my Equine Science class. I could have practiced the piano or the violin or cleaned my room. I possibly could have filled out some scholarship stuff so I can actually go to college after I graduate high school this spring, But nope! I spent all day sleeping on the couch, Facebooking, Pinteresting, watching pointless YouTube videos, and daydreaming about that cute boy on my debate team.
{Found on Pinterest.com}
I just realized something disturbing. I truly am lazy. Crap. I gotta get my crap together...
